The Wheelchair Handbook: A consumer’s guide to seating & mobility equipment

This is part of our series highlighting a consumer’s guide to seating and mobility equipment. Check out The Wheelchair Handbook for more information about the wheelchair service provision process.

The Wheelchair Handbook: A consumer’s guide to seating and mobility equipment is intended to provide you, the consumer, with information about the wheelchair service provision process. This guide can be used when you are being evaluated for your first wheelchair, before receiving a new or replacement wheelchair, and to share with your caregivers involved in these processes. For the purposes of this guide, the term “consumer” will be used to represent those using wheelchairs and is inclusive of other terms referring to these individuals such as patients, end user, clients, wheelchair user, wheelchair rider, and riders.

This guide seeks to show the equipment solutions that Permobil manufactures and how they may benefit a variety of consumers in many ways. Please note: we intended to include a wide variety of equipment solutions but this is not all inclusive. Consult with your healthcare providers and work with your team to identify the best technology solutions for you and your needs. This document contains current information based on the time of the publication October 2021.

Chapters in the guide include:

  • Your right to choose
  • Process to obtain equipment
  • Power wheelchairs
  • Manual wheelchairs and power assist solutions
  • Seating and positioning
  • Funding considerations
  • Resources
  • References

Note: Guide includes funding and resources separated for the U.S. and Canada.

“It is well worth the read and probably one of the most important things a wheelchair user, or their family that helps with wheelchair purchase decisions, could have the opportunity of reading before a purchase and during the life of their wheelchair.

I really liked how it is explains that they, the consumer, are in charge.

The guide can not only help the consumer, but the entire team working together to ensure that the person getting the wheelchair has a successful experience that will lead to years of independence and quality of life.”
