Material Matters: Substance and Design of Custom Manual Wheelchairs (0.1CEU)

Date: Thursday, Dec. 3, from 4 – 5:15 p.m. EST

Speaker: Thomas Halka, MOT, OTR, ATP, Clinical Education Manager

Webinar Overview: The materials used in complex rehab technology (CRT) are sophisticated and varied. Clinicians and ATPs recommend CRT for their patients every day, and the composition of this equipment has a direct impact on the patients’ health, functional performance, physical experience, and overall quality of life. Clinical decision making should include a more in-depth understanding of the materials that make up the equipment selected. Yet, many clinicians and ATPs have had a lack of in-depth training and experience with these materials due to insufficient emphasis in current trainings and courses, productivity demands of the clinic, and an ever-changing industry involving improving technologies and materials.

This 60-minute live lecture will address how materials are designed, used and combined in CRT to improve the lives of wheelchair end users and to provide an extensive look at materials that are typically incorporated into manual wheelchairs. Materials such as plastic, steel, aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber will be reviewed, with an emphasis on the complexities and variations that exist within these deceptively general material descriptions. By the end of the course, clinicians and providers will have an improved ability to recognize different materials associated with individually configured ultra-lightweight manual wheelchair design and be able to discuss significant advantages and disadvantages of each material.

In addition: GoToWebinar also works best in Google Chrome if you have that available.

Though the course itself is one hour, we are adding an additional 15 minutes to the webinar time to allow for detailed instructions on the CEU sign-in and post-course assessment process. Instructions will be provided during the webinar on how to obtain your CEU credit. Please keep in mind that you need to attend 100% of the CEU as well as complete an assessment with a code provided at the end of the presentation. We will be electronically monitoring for attentiveness and attendance.

Material Matters: Substance and Design of Seating Components (0.1CEU)

Date: Thursday, Dec. 10, from 3 – 4:15 p.m. EST

Speaker: Eleni Halkiotis, MOT, OTR/L, ATP, Regional Clinical Education Manager

Webinar Overview: The materials and design of seating components, in conjunction with the mobility base setup, will directly impact a client’s skin and tissue health, posture and alignment, as well as functional ability. Unfortunately, the design and material choices of seating products are often overlooked in the decision-making process. This one-hour live lecture session will focus on a basic science of materials approach in the selection of appropriate wheelchair seating products. Discussions will revolve around the advantages and limitations of seating solutions based upon scientific principles, design factors, and how the material choices are applied clinically to address the clients’ needs. Specific attention will focus on how client movement throughout the day, changes in posture over time, and clinical and best practice guidelines can impact the seating and positioning component decision-making process. By the end of the course, clinicians will have a better understanding of how to match strategies for pressure management and postural stability, client presentation, and product performance characteristics.
